LIVE WEBINAR SERIES:
USE OF METHADONE IN PAIN MANAGEMENT
Director of Pharmacy Internship
MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care
Clinical Professor, St. John’s University
Purpose: The purpose of this webinar is to review the guidelines and provide recommendations for the safe use of methadone for chronic pain, including how to avoid risks related to overdose and cardiac arrhythmias. This webinar will address safety in methadone prescribing practices.
Why Do I Need to Know This? Methadone is an opioid analgesic that has been used in the United States for over 50 years as an effective treatment for opioid addiction and chronic pain. Yet many myths about its use persist, discouraging patients from using methadone, and leading family members to pressure patients using the treatment to stop. This webinar will help clinicians understand the basic principles of methadone use for the treatment of opioid addiction and chronic pain.
- Discuss the basic pharmacology of methadone
- Discuss the unique properties of methadone
- Develop strategies to reduce the risk of overdose and other serious harms associated with methadone use
Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students
Criteria for Successful Completion:
- Attendance at entire session
- Submission of completed evaluation form
- Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)
