LIVE WEBINAR SERIES:
THE POWER OF LANGUAGE: LINKING WORD CHOICE TO OUTCOMES AND INEQUITIES

Terry Altilio, LCSW, APHSW-C
Palliative Social Work Consultant
Anne M. Kelemen, LICSW, APHSW-C
Private Practice, Palliative Care Consulting
Purpose: This webinar will highlight the impact of "open notes" as a catalyst to enhanced attention to language and word choice, isolating unintended consequences of our written and oral communications. By isolating a sampling of words and phrases infused in healthcare and more specifically palliative and hospice parlance the intention is to raise consciousness and discernment in how clinicians both initiate and respond to language that may do unintended harm.
Objectives:
- Recognize that language and word choice ubiquitous in palliative practice have the potential to create unintended consequences and impact outcomes, creating distance when the intention is to build relationships
- Utilize constructs such as testimonial injustice and delegitimization to inform communication whether in documentation or conversation
- Develop confidence and emerging comfort to intervene when language and word choice used in patient care impacts outcomes and may reflect bias and foster inequities
Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students
Criteria for Successful Completion:
- Attendance at entire session
- Submission of completed evaluation form
