FAMILY MEETINGS IN HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE

Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to describe the importance of the family meeting as a best practice for advance care planning and caregiver support in hospice and palliative care.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss best practices related to the family meeting in hospice and palliative care
  2. Describe core communication skills integral to the family meeting
  3. Discuss challenging clinical scenarios in the context of the family meeting

Target Audience: primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest (70% for physicians, non-physicians, and nurses; 80% for social workers)

Continuing Education Credits: 1.0

Release Date: July 10, 2018

Expiration Date: June 15, 2021 (for physicians and non-physicians); February 14, 2021 (for nurses); January 31, 2022 (for NYS Social Workers)

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Accreditation Requirements and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) and the MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care. MSSNY is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. 

The Medical Society of the State of New York designated this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
