Purpose: Governor Kathy Hochul signed New York’s Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) law on February 6, 2026. This puts New York as the 13th state to legalize the practice and allow terminally ill patients to regain control of their own death. All clinicians in New York State, particularly in hospice and palliative care, will need to be prepared as this new law comes into effect, respond to patient and family inquiries regarding the procedure, and incorporate them into their policies. This webinar will discuss the practice of MAID since it was first legalized in Oregon in 1997, the ethical implications, the requirements for medical documentation, and the dispensing and administration of life-ending medications.
Objectives:
- Discuss the history of Medical Aid in Dying in the United States, leading up to the State of New York law
- Discuss the requirements for medical documentation, dispensing, and administering the life-ending medications
- Provide suggestions on how to develop organizational policies and procedures for Medical Aid in Dying
Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students
