Purpose: The overall goal of this webinar is to provide useful strategies in the practice of effective and empathic communication around SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression) information for all patients and, most especially, the older LGBTQ adult. It is incredibly important that to do so, and all clinical and non-clinical staff need to understand and recognize the lived experiences of this population and mitigate implicit biases towards them. In so doing, we thereby provide care in a manner of inclusivity through the delivery of high quality holistic and humanistic geriatric, palliative, hospice, and end-of-life care. This will be a step further in normalizing conversations, opening minds and hearts, and creating a shift in the culture of utmost acceptance.

Objectives:

  1. Recognize and define basic terms, constructs, and concepts affecting the lived experiences of the LGBTQ population
  2. Discuss key points in the multidimensional approach to high-quality geriatric, palliative, hospice, and end-of-life care for this population
  3. Apply effective and inclusive strategies in the areas of empathic, sensitive, and normalized communication eliciting routine SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression) information to all patients and navigating relevant challenges

Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:
