Purpose: The purpose of this webinar is to communicate the significance of patient-preferred music when addressing goals through music.

Objectives:  

  1. Review research on music and the brain
  2. Explain how familiar songs enhance the connection between music and the brain
  3. Describe music therapy interventions that use familiar songs to address patient goals, with simpler interventions that could be used by other clinicians and caregivers

Target Audience: Registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, creative arts therapists

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)

Continuing Education Accreditation

Nurses: The MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Social Workers: MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0242.

Music Therapists: Patient-Preferred Music to Address Therapeutic Goals is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 1 Continuing Music Therapy Education credit. The MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care, Provider Number 150, maintains responsibility for program quality and adherence to CBMT policies and criteria.

Completion of this course does not ensure that the participant is currently a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). Verify music therapy board certification status at www.cbmt.org.
