LIVE WEBINAR SERIES:
ROLE OF MEDICAL CANNABIS FOR THE SERIOUSLY ILL

Speaker
Speaker: Bernard Lee, MD
Associate Chief Medical Officer
MJHS Hospice and Palliative Care

Purpose: The purpose of this webinar is to provide a basic understanding of the clinical uses of medical marijuana to clinicians.

Why Do I Need to Know This? Marijuana is now legal for medical use in 28 states and Washington D.C., and is also legal in eight of these states for recreational or ‘adult use.’ Now that medical marijuana is legal in more than half of the U.S., with additional states voting on legislation, it is important for medical professionals to have at least a basic understanding of the risks and benefits of cannabis. Given the volume of anecdotal evidence, plus a small number of randomized controlled trials, it is apparent that there is great potential for cannabis and cannabinoids to provide suffering patients with palliation of many symptoms.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the basic principles of the cannabinoids
  2. Recognize the essential failure behind the pure medicalization of chronic pain
  3. Discuss the pivotal role that palliative medicine can play in the healing process of chronic pain, thanks to its multidisciplinary nature

Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)
