Purpose: The purpose of this webinar is to enable the learner to describe the complexity of dyspnea in the setting of advanced disease and the ways in which clinicians can remediate this frequent symptom.
Why Do I Need to Know This? Dyspnea is a relatively common symptom at end of life, and usually treated in a suboptimal fashion by medical specialists. Assertive yet careful treatment of dyspnea can lead to improvements in quality of life for both patients living with chronic illness (COPD, CHF) or patients approaching end of life.
- Discuss the symptom of dyspnea in advanced illness
- Describe the assessment of dyspnea in advanced illness and its complexity
- Identify approaches to the management of dyspnea in the setting of advanced disease
Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students
Criteria for Successful Completion:
- Attendance at entire session
- Submission of completed evaluation form
- Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)
