Purpose: The goal of this panel discussion is for clinicians to better understand the nuances of end of life and death affecting families from different cultures in their practice.

Objectives:

  1. Identify key approaches to use with patients and families when discussing planning for end of life with patients/families from three diverse faiths
  2. Examine cultural taboos and superstitions surrounding end-of-life/death discussion initiation and how best to address them sensitively
  3. Improve knowledge about death practices and bereavement needs of persons from three diverse faiths

Target Audience: Social workers and healthcare coaches, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, and registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest (70% for nurses; 80% for social workers)

Continuing Education Credits: 1.0

Nurses:  MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Social Workers: MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0242.
