Purpose: End-of-life family vigils have been well documented within rites of human passage during the transition of dying to death. The purpose of this webinar is to define and understand the structure and meaning of family vigils by providing current qualitative research on the topic. This knowledge will provide insight and enhance communication and practice skills for nurses providing care for families at end-of-life.


  1. Describe and identify family vigils at end-of-life
  2. Identify three phases of end-of-life vigils
  3. Discuss meaning of vigils for families
  4. Discuss role of the nurse in family vigils
  5. Integrate best practices for care, support, and facilitation of family vigils for improved family outcomes after loss

Target Audience: Nursing administrators and managers, nurses, and healthcare coaches

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form

Continuing Education Credits: 1.0

Nurses:  MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by The Alabama State Nurses Association, an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
