Purpose:  Deprescribing can be defined as the process of dose reduction, withdrawal, or discontinuation of medications which are considered inappropriate in an individual. The goal of this webinar is to provide an overview of “deprescribing.” Potential benefits and harms will be discussed, followed by the barriers, challenges to and enablers of deprescribing. The webinar will also provide practical recommendations to recognize opportunities and strategies for deprescribing in clinical practice. 

Objectives:  

  1. Discuss principles of safe medication discontinuation (renal dosing, drug interactions)
  2. Review guidelines for deprescribing across continuum of care
  3. Provide deprescribing resources for providers and patients

Target Audience:  palliative care specialists, pain specialists, primary care providers, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, advance practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, pharmacists, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session 
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest (70% passing grade for physicians, non-physicians, and nurses)

Continuing Education Credits:  1.0

Release Date: August 7, 2018

Expiration Date: June 15, 2021 (for physicians and non-physicians); February 14, 2021 (for nurses)

Continuing Education Accreditation

Physicians: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Accreditation Requirements and Policies of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) through the joint providership of MSSNY and the MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care.
