Hospice & Palliative Care

Purpose: This online course consists of a course orientation and three modules. It aims to sensitize and prepare healthcare professionals working with Holocaust survivors and their families, as well as other trauma survivors, to recognize and respond to post-traumatic stress symptoms and deliver person-centered, trauma-informed care at the end of life.

Objectives:
1) Explain the historical context and impact of the Holocaust on Holocaust survivors and their families
2) Explain how healthcare professionals and others in the Nazi regime intentionally dehumanized and experimented on unwilling, vulnerable victims
3) Identify Holocaust survivor status and assess for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
4) Recognize the impact of trauma on Holocaust survivors and their families as it manifests at the end of life
5) Explore areas in need of reconciliation for Holocaust survivors and their families
6) Describe the recommended interventions/best practices for person-centered, trauma-informed (PCTI) care
7) Review the elements of self-care when caring for Holocaust survivors
8) Review lessons learned from clinicians who provide care to Holocaust survivors

Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, creative arts therapists, and medical students.

Criteria for Successful Completion:
1) Attendance at entire session
2) Submission of completed evaluation form
3) Successful completion of a posttest: 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)

Continuing Education Credits: 3.25 (3.0 for CBMT)

Caring for Holocaust Survivors With Sensitivity at the End of Life provides 3.25 continuing education credits for clinicians who meet course completion requirements:

• Introduction to Caring for Holocaust Survivors With Sensitivity at the End of Life
• Module 1 Impact of the Holocaust on Survivors and Their Families (1 hour)
• Module 2 Impact of Trauma on Survivors at the End of Life and Its Transmission to the 2G Survivors (1 hour)
• Module 3 Delivering Person-Centered, Trauma-Informed (PCTI) and Culturally Sensitive Hospice and Palliative Care (1.25 hours)

Expiration Date: September 1, 2024 (for creative art therapists); July 29, 2023 (for physicians and non-physicians); April 17, 2024 (for nurses); January 31, 2025 (for NYS Social Workers)

Continuing Education Accreditation:

Music Therapists: This online course, Caring for Holocaust Survivors With Sensitivity at the End of Life is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 3.0 Continuing Music Therapy Education credit. The MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care, Provider Number 150, maintains responsibility for program quality and adherence to CBMT policies and criteria.

Completion of this course does not ensure that the participant is currently a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). Verify music therapy board certification status at www.cbmt.org.

Nurses: The MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by The Alabama State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Social Workers: This educational activity is approved for 3.25 continuing education contact hours for social work. The MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0242.
