Purpose: Discrimination against LGBTQ+ persons in healthcare creates barriers to serious illness care, including patients avoiding or delaying necessary care, providers disrespecting wishes of surrogates, and adverse outcomes for patients and families. This webinar presents research that demonstrated high levels of disrespectful and inadequate care towards patients and partners due to being LGBTQ+, especially problematic for Black and Hispanic patients and those living in politically conservative regions. Recommendations include federal and state civil rights laws to prohibit LGBTQ+ discrimination and institutional practices to address discrimination, including cultural sensitivity training for staff.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the extent and type of disrespectful, inappropriate, and abusive practices faced by seriously ill LGBTQ+ individuals and their partners when receiving care for serious illness, including hospice and palliative care.
  2. Recognize the impact of patient characteristics, such as race, ethnicity, and region of residence, on discriminatory practices towards seriously ill LGBTQ+ patients and their partners.
  3. Describe potential recommendations to address disparities in care, including sensitivity training for staff, institutional practice and policy remedies, and advocacy for changes in public policy.
