Purpose: The purpose of this case conference is to enhance knowledge in the palliation of sickle cell anemia patients with frequent pain episodes. 


  1. Assess the patient with acute somatic and nociceptive pain in the context of chronic illness
  2. Employ first-line treatment of recurring pain crises in the patient with sickle cell anemia
  3. Understand when referral for palliative specialist care is helpful and important in conjunction with oncologic/hematologic management of patients  with sickle cell anemia

Why Do I Need to Know This?
To enhance the quality of care provided to patients with acute somatic and nociceptive pain in chronic disease. 

Target Audience: primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, pharmacists, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest (70% for physicians, non-physicians, and nurses; 80% for social workers)

Continuing Education Credits: 0.5

Release Date: June 25, 2018

Expiration Date: June 15, 2019 (for physicians and non-physicians); February 14, 2021 (for nurses); January 31, 2022 (for NYS Social Workers)
