Purpose: Disorders of consciousness, such as coma, vegetative state, and minimally conscious state present a unique challenge for the palliative care team, given the often sudden and unexpected onset, the uncertainties of prognosis, and the profound barriers to patient communication. The aim of this webinar is to provide the necessary knowledge base and skills to the interdisciplinary palliative care team to better support patients, families, and other caregivers who are facing these conditions.

Objectives:

  1. Differentiate between coma, vegetative state, and minimally conscious state
  2. Review prognostic indicators for patients in coma and other disorders of consciousness
  3. Identify strategies to address common family and caregiver questions and concerns, including communication and pain management

Target Audience: Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, palliative care specialists, pain specialists, registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses with a specialty in palliative care/hospice, social workers, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students

Criteria for Successful Completion:

  1. Attendance at entire session
  2. Submission of completed evaluation form
  3. Successful completion of a posttest; 80% passing grade (mandatory to receive CE credit for social workers)

Continuing Education Accreditation

Physicians: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Accreditation Requirements and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) and the MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care. MSSNY is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Medical Society of the State of New York designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by The Alabama State Nurses Association, an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Social Workers: MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0242.
